THE SHIELD EARRING QUARTER

Sunday, December 4, 2016 10:43:18 PM America/Los_Angeles

Broadly defined, a wide variety of coins fall into the category of pattern coins, experimental and trial pieces. Patterns, narrowly defined, are design concepts that should logically have been considered, were considered but never adopted for regular coinage, or not yet adopted when the respective patterns were made. In fact, many patterns never made it beyond the Mint’s doors and were often destroyed. That being said, of all the Pattern Coins, the Shield Earring patterns are considered among the most beautiful, artistically appealing and coveted of all pattern coins from the late 19th century. Rare coin collectors and pattern specialists generally consider the 1872 Amazonian, the 1879 Schoolgirl, and the 1882 Shield Earring designs to be the most beautiful, but of the three the Shield Earring is the rarest overall. Currently known, nine examples of the silver Shield Earring quarter exist, although it is speculated that some of the pieces may be duplicates and several.

Currency of the Republic of Texas

Monday, September 5, 2016 11:41:46 PM America/Los_Angeles

Texas’ roots have a rich and fascinating history that has become the subject of many Hollywood movies. But what many people don’t know is that after the Texas Revolution, as Texas became a republic and independent from Mexico’s rule, it was plagued with money troubles and was in such debt that the problem lasted for its entire existence. To Texans of the period, money meant coins and notes, since neither an incorporated nor a private bank operated in Texas during the entire period of the republic. Imports exceeded exports, and the adverse trade balance drained out gold, silver, and other money that was acceptable abroad.

The coin that introduced the Motto “In God We Trust”

Wednesday, August 17, 2016 11:33:36 PM America/Los_Angeles

It’s true,  the coin was the Shield Two-Cent piece minted from 1864 to 1873. Unfortunately, this coin is one of the shortest lived and least successful U.S. coins in America’s history. The United States Mint produced it for only ten years and each year the mintage continued to declined, reflecting steadily falling public interest. Yet, despite its failure as a medium of exchange, the Shield two-cent piece made one singular and enduring contribution to our nation’s coinage history, it was the coin that introduced us to the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST”.
